What is breast reduction?

Breast reduction is a surgical procedure that removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to reduce the size and weight of the breasts. In addition to decreasing volume, the nipple and areola are repositioned to a more youthful and natural height, and the diameter of enlarged areolas is often reduced.

This procedure is ideal for women who experience physical or emotional discomfort due to overly large breasts. Common symptoms include chronic pain in the neck, back, or shoulders; skin irritation under the breasts; difficulty exercising or wearing supportive clothing; posture issues; shoulder grooving from bra straps; and low self-esteem related to body image. In patients with a high fat content in the breasts—particularly women over 45—breast liposuction can be used to sculpt and lighten the overall contour, especially in the lateral chest area, achieving a more refined and proportionate shape.

The surgery lasts approximately 2 to 3 hours, is performed under local anesthesia with sedation, and may require an overnight hospital stay depending on the case. Initial recovery takes about 10 to 14 days, with final results typically visible within 3 months.

  • Requirements: Complete blood count, coagulation times, blood chemistry. Cardiac evaluation is required for patients over 50.
  • Postoperative care: A compression bra must be worn for 4 weeks. Strenuous physical activity should be avoided during the first month, and scars should be protected from sun exposure to promote optimal healing.

Benefits of a breast reduction

For women with large breasts, this procedure provides freedom, improves posture and increases confidence. Under the care of Dr. César López, breast reduction focuses on rebalancing body proportions and improving quality of life, while maintaining aesthetic harmony.

Physical relief from chronic pain

Heavy breasts often cause constant pain in the neck and back, grooves in the shoulders, and skin irritation. The reduction significantly alleviates this burden and improves mobility and posture.

Better breast shape and firmness

In addition to reducing the volume, the procedure reshape and lift the breast, which gives him a more youthful and elevated position.

Better clothing fit and active lifestyle

Patients can comfortably wear supportive bras, tight clothing, and exercise without restrictions or discomfort

Areolar correction

If necessary, the procedure reduces the areolar diameter and repositions the nipples, restoring natural proportions and central alignment.

Early recovery

Pain is usually well controlled with oral medications. They will recommend that you rest, avoid lifting objects or straining your arms, and that you sleep at a high altitude for the first week.

Will I lose nipple sensitivity or the ability to breastfeed?

In most cases, no. Dr. López uses techniques that preserve the neurovascular supply to the nipple. However, some changes in sensation are normal during healing.

How much smaller will my breasts be?

That depends on your goals and your anatomy. Dr. Lopez will help determine an appropriate volume reduction to restore comfort and proportion.

Will I need drains?

In some cases, yes. Surgical drains help remove fluid for the first 24 to 48 hours and reduce the risk of complications.

Will my breasts be lifted too?

Yes, breast reduction always includes a lifting component, remodeling the breast mound and elevating the nipple to a more natural position.
