What is eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a procedure that improves the appearance and function of the eyelids by removing or repositioning excess skin and fat. As we age, the structures around the eyes weaken, leading to sagging, puffiness, and in some cases, vision obstruction. Dr. César López specializes in blepharoplasty—focusing not only on what should be removed, but also on what should be preserved—to ensure facial balance, natural expression, and symmetry.

This procedure can correct drooping upper eyelids, under-eye bags, deep tear troughs, eye asymmetry, and a heavy or tired look around the eyes. The result is a refreshed, rejuvenated gaze that maintains your natural appearance. The surgery takes approximately 1 hour, is performed under local anesthesia with sedation, and does not require hospitalization. Initial recovery takes around 7 days, with final results becoming visible after about 3 months.

  • Requirements: Complete blood count, coagulation times, blood chemistry. Cardiac evaluation is required for patients over 50 years old.
  • Postoperative care: Avoid bending and lifting heavy objects for 2 weeks. LED light therapy is recommended, and sun exposure should be avoided.

Is this procedure right for you?

Most candidates are adults over 30 who are starting to see signs of aging around their eyes. However, younger patients with inherited traits (e.g., naturally puffy eyes or thick eyelids) may also benefit.

You can be a good candidate if

  • You have excess skin on your upper eyelids
  • You have bags or swelling under your eyes
  • You notice a tired or sad expression that doesn't reflect how you feel
  • You have no major eye or systemic health problems
  • You don't currently smoke or you can stop smoking during healing
  • You have realistic expectations and are looking for natural results

This procedure is not recommended if

  • You have diabetes, hypertension or poorly controlled cardiovascular diseases
  • You have dry eye syndrome or untreated eye conditions
  • Autoimmune disorders that affect healing
  • You have recent eye or facial surgery in the same area
  • You have unrealistic expectations or a desire for drastic changes

Benefits of eyelid surgery

Undergoing plastic surgery with Dr. César López means more than simply refining a feature: it's about restoring balance, regaining confidence, and achieving results that feel as good as they look. Each procedure is designed not only to improve specific areas of the face or body, but also to improve overall harmony, comfort and well-being.

Improved vision and eye comfort

For many, sagging skin creates a physical obstruction in the upper visual field. Removing that skin can improve peripheral vision and reduce eye fatigue.

Improved emotional expression

By removing heaviness from the eye area, patients often report feeling more expressive, self-confident, and emotionally “visible” again.

Restored facial harmony

The eyes are essential for facial communication. Blepharoplasty can significantly reduce signs of fatigue, sadness or aging, creating a more balanced and serene expression.

Fast, low-impact recovery

Unlike more invasive procedures, eyelid surgery recovers relatively quickly with minimal downtime, especially when performed with precision and care.

The process and recovery

Both surgical and recovery processes follow a safe line, personally guided by Dr. López.

01

Personalized planning

Eyelid surgery is performed in a certified operating room at a hospital with local or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure.

02

Surgical procedure

Dr. López begins by precisely measuring the excess skin to be removed. Inject a local anaesthetic into the eyelid to avoid any discomfort.

03

Early recovery

Most patients describe recovery as smooth and relatively painless. Swelling and bruising usually peak in the first 48 to 72 hours and go away in 7 to 10 days.

Is this procedure cosmetic only?

No. While most patients undergo eyelid surgery for cosmetic reasons, upper blepharoplasty can improve vision by removing skin that obstructs the visual field.

Can I combine it with another procedure?

Yes. Blepharoplasty is often well combined with brow lifts, facelifts, or non-surgical treatments, such as fillers. Dr. López will recommend what best suits your anatomy.

What risks are involved?

As with any surgery, there are risks of bleeding, infection, asymmetry, or dry eye. However, Dr. López takes extensive precautions to minimize risks and optimize recovery.

Will I look different?

Not artificially. You'll look like yourself, only more awake, refreshed and balanced. Most patients say that their friends comment: “You look great”, without realizing that you have had the surgery.
